Preventative Care

Both natural teeth and teeth with restorations survive best in an oral environment that is clean, and where the intake of harmful foods is controlled. Our program is designed to help preserve your natural and restored teeth, prevent new cavities, maximize life of your restorations, and manage periodontal (gum) disease and oral tissues. At the initial cleaning visit oral hygiene instructions are reviewed and are reinforced at subsequent visits.

The following are helpful recommendations:

  • In Hawaii the water is not fluoridated except on the military bases.  Dr. Chin will discuss the type of toothpaste best for you e.g. higher fluoride (by prescription), remineralization, desensitization, dry mouth formulations.
  • Brush your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush aimed at the gum.  A toothbrush will be included as a courtesy with your cleaning while supplies last.
  • Floss at minimum, every night keeping the floss in a U-shape to hug the tooth surface. The type of floss used is your personal preference.  Tying a knot in your floss prior to gently flossing behind your last teeth will help your better clean the gum pocket behind the last teeth.
  • Gently brush and floss as often as possible after you eat and/or at minimum before bedtime.
  • There are many cleaning aids that can be used as needed/recommended- disclosing tablets, mechanical toothbrushes, waterflossers, softpiks, floss holders, small brushes.
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.
  • Avoid sticky sugary foods and drinks, sodas.
  • Eat a balanced diet trying to minimize acidity whenever possible.
  • Chew slowly and avoid hard foods and crunching on ice.
  • Use products containing xylitol (natural sugar substitute) to help reduce decay e.g. mints, gum, and mouthwashes.
  • Use non alcohol antiseptic and fluoride rinses as directed.
  • Have sealants placed on permanent teeth as indicated.
  • Have regular check-ups, cleanings and fluoride varnish application as recommended by Dr. Chin.  Certain habits and conditions increase your risk of developing cavities and periodontal disease e.g. smoking, diabetes, dry mouth, crowded teeth.
